Chapter 12

Jake

It was the third time that Jake had carried her back to bed. Charmaine was not asleep this time. She was just exhausted and there was a slight moment of guilt because he had worn her out. Humans couldn't keep up with shifters in anything that they did, including making love. That's what it was too. Whatever happened between them, his dragon had claimed her as his own. He didn't have a choice. Everything inside of him felt like what he had done was right, even though he knew better. If she ever found out the truth, he hated to think about what would happen.

She made a slight whimpering sound when he laid her down. Charmaine wasn’t asleep, but she wasn't really with it either. She was clinging to him and asking him where he was going.

Jake had to get to the village, he had to see what was going on, and even though he didn't want to leave her, he knew that he had to.

“I will be back in a little bit. Keep the bed warm for me.”

She said that she would, her sleepy smile a balm to his soul. Why was he fighting it so much? He loved her, needed her, so why did he even try to fight it? It didn't make any sense. It obviously wasn't doing them any good.

Then he thought about Colin, what he had told him, the guilt that was driving him absolutely insane. He couldn't pretend like he hadn’t made some bad decisions. Charmaine was one of them, but he told Colin no exceptions. He was dangerously into the hypocrite zone. How could he be with a human, and at the same time tell his very dear friend that he had to kill the woman he loved because she was human?

The only consolation that Jake had was the fact that he had not let Charmaine find out about him. If she had, obviously he would have to do the same thing. There was no other way to justify it, and since he knew that he was going to see Colin and he was going to tell him about Charmaine, because he needed to tell somebody, he had to come up with an excuse for why it was okay for him and not for Colin. Colin would see the hypocrisy just as Jake did. He wished there was another way, maybe he didn't have to tell him at all, but Jake knew that he would. Colin was his best friend, he had to share everything with him. The last thing he thought about though before he took off to the village was if Colin was going to forgive him. That was a scary idea that he wouldn’t because he couldn't even fathom the two of them having a falling out. What happened if his best friend didn't want to forgive him? Could he really blame him?

Jake made sure that everyone was away from him, and he went straight to the village. It
